Photography Case Study -

Even though fixed in time, a photograph evokes as much feeling as that which comes from music or dance. Whatever the mode – from the snapshot to the decisive moment to multi-media montage – the intent and purpose of photography is to render in visual terms feelings and experiences that often elude the ability of words to describe. In any case, the eyes have it, and the imagination will always soar farther than was expected. – Ralph Gibson

This week you will be undertaking a research task into a noted photographer. Please choose one of the following four who are famous for their portrait photography and have all worked with musicians.

1. David Bailey
2. Annie Leibovitz
3. David LaChapelle
4. Mario Testino

I will expect to see on your blog a small biography on the photographer and their history of work.

I would also like to see you select a variety of their images and show the style of their work.

Finally I would like you to analyse at least one or two images that inspire you and explain why as alongside providing a technical photographic analysis of the image.

Double Page Spread Analysis

After today's lesson your week should be focused on reading lots of feature articles and analysing the key conventions of the DPS.

For Homework I would like to see the following on your blog space:

1. In class DPS analysis typed up
2. Another DPS analysis using our amazing DPS worksheet - must be from your chosen GENRE
3. Any other music DPS pages that inspire you and what you would like to borrow or replicate for your own final product - here you can do a collage of different mags, images, fonts etc... Just be sure to identify what is inspiring you :)

FINALLY...all of this DPS analysis should lead you to creating your DPS pencil sketch. Use your glossary of Magazine Terminology as a checklist to be sure you include lots of the key conventions the examiner will be looking for :)

Happy Analysing,
Miss D
